Choirs sing for Sikkim earthquake victims

The season of Christmas was ushered in by the annual feature of the festival of carols, Humanitas, on Sunday, December 18. A number of choirs from city colleges took part. The prominent ones were St Joseph's College, St Joseph's College of Commerce, Christ University, Mount Carmel College, Jyoti Nivas, among others.

The choirs sang both traditional as well as contemporary carols, which included Go Tell it on the Mountains, Mary rock your baby, Baby Jesus is born, besides many other renditions that set the mood of Christmas.

This year the collection made from this charity show will be donated to the Sikkim earthquake victims, the organisers said.

Over 2000 students march past at Annual Sports Day

It was indeed a historic day for St Joseph’s College on Friday, as, perhaps, for the first time in its 129 years of existence, over 2000 students from 64 classes took part in a colourful march past at the Annual Sports Meet. It was a sight to watch what with enthusiastic students clad in a variety of attire marching to the beats of the band, filling almost the entire College grounds. What was unique about the whole march past was the fact that even many class mentors marched along with their students, adding to the festive mood on the campus.

The successful march past was the culmination of weeklong practice sessions held repeatedly by the students. In many cases, the teachers took the initiative to teach the students to put the right marching steps. It all ended so well, with almost 100 per cent participation and co-operation both by the students and the teachers.

The Annual Sports Day was inaugurated by Anumpama Shivappa, internationally renowned hockey umpire. In her message she motivated the students to focus on the goal and strive hard to achieve it. “I urge you students to have a goal in anything that you do and work hard to achieve it, no matter what the difficulties are,” she said. She also added that it gave her a special feeling to be part of such a wonderful gathering.

Principal, Fr Daniel Fernandes said that sports day was a special day to recognise the contribution of so many students who brought laurels to the College. “We have so many students who are good in sports and are bringing honour to the Collge. It is our responsibility to recognise their talents and honour them,” he said.

The mood at the inaugural of the Sports Day was one of fun and excitement. Rightly was a student overheard saying, “What a special feeling!”

Festive mood at Alumni Reunion

The annual Alumni Reunion of St Joseph’s College had a festive mood this year what with the entire campus decked up with flags, graffiti, balloons and flex banners. The symbolic College colours blue and white stood out as scores of alumni members trickled in to relive the old memories here on Sunday, October 30. All were in a nostalgic mood, meeting their classmates and teachers, even as the musical band of Fabian and Co went down memory lane playing vintage old numbers like Alice and Hotel California.

Retired teachers Louisa Mathias and Dr Koppikar were felicitated by the Alumni in the morning. The new Principal Fr Daniel Fernandes too was formally welcomed and honoured by the President of the Association Mr Lakshminarayana.

In his address, Fr Fernandes said that the attachment to the institution begins right from the school days itself. “As former students all of you are called to bring about some change in society, especially in the lives of the less fortunate,” he said. He also invited the alumni members to take active role in the growth of the institution and constantly be in touch.

Ms Louisa Mathias and Dr Koppikar relived their memories of their teaching days and agreed that some of their best days were spent in the College.

It was fun and frolic thereafter. The old students, right from 1950s to those who passed out just last year, were seen meeting and reliving their past days. Some of them even agreed that they felt attached to the old campus on Residency Road.

The instant photo session and caricature activities were a big hit among the alumni. Many were seen taking umpteen pictures with their friends and teachers.

A giant LED screen was set up for the audience to watch the live telecast of the inaugural FI race which was won by the Champion Sebastian Vettel of Ref Bull. The chilled beer helped them cool down the excitement.

Most were of the opinion that it was one of the best organised Alumni reunions.

Principal calls upon students to become leaders

Principal, Fr Daniel Fernandes has called upon students to be responsible and work towards bringing about harmony and change in India.

He was addressing the students after unfurling the national flag on the occasion of Independence Day celebration in the campus here on Tuesday.

He said: “Our country is a great country. However, evils like corruption have done harm to us. Our own state Karnataka ranks first in the list of most corrupt states. Men like Anna Hazare are working hard to restore the lost pride of our nation and the young people must support him.”

Making reference to the survey conducted by the Times of India which states that rural youth are the most disadvantaged as regards education, he said: “We have 40% our population between the age group on 13 to 35. It is a young nation. The challenge before us is only 11% of the youth make to the higher education. What happens to the other large number of our youth? Either they are unemployed, underemployed. They too have dreams and aspirations like any of us. As we celebrate the Independence day its our responsibility to be sensitive to the youth of our country.”

Fr Principal also said that poverty was yet another major concern in the country and called upon students to contribute their mite to work towards alleviating poverty. "In spite of the progress we see in some pockets our country, there are a large number of our people in the villages and tribal areas who lack basic necessities for a meaningful existence. As responsible citizens of the country we should never loose sight of this fact," he said.

Fr Principal further added, “Ours is a young nation and hence the future lies in the hands of the young. It is, thus, important that young people come forward and join politics and take leadership in this country.”

He also said that education is the key to the future of the country. “Only through education can a nation grow. The government must make sure that all children get education and thus are able to come up in life.”

Protocol Officer, Mr Anuplal led the ceremony to perfection. There was also a short cultural programme after the flag hoisting where students from the Cultural Committee sang patriotic songs and performed a dance.

College celebrates Dalai Lama's birthday

For the first time in the history of SJC, the students of North East and Tibetan Forum (NETF) came together to celebrate the 76th birthday of the Dalai Lama, here on Wednesday.

The programme, which was scheduled to be held at the quadrangle was later organised at themultipurpose hall due to sudden rainfall. However, this did not dampen the excitement among the students.

Fr Daniel Fernandes , Principal of SJC and N Dhondup , Director of the Tibetan Youth Hostel, were the chief guests at the event.

Adressing the students, Fr Fernandes said, "I am happy to see that you have wonderfully preserved the Tibetan culture and tradition. I encourage all the Tibetan students to work hard in promoting the Tibetan culture and keep the dream of going back to a free Tibet always alive."

Speaking about the importance of celebrating this day, Mr Dhondup, said, "Today is a very special day for all the Tibetans living in exile. It is because of him that we have an identity in India. We look up to him as our spiritual leader and saviour. Therefore every year we celebrate his birthday, wishing for his long life and happiness."

Overwhelmed by the response, Phuntsok Tashi, co-ordinator of (NETF), said , "The turn out was huge. I deeply thank Fr Daniel for his support, without whom this event would not have been a success. "

Students Council sworn in for the academic year

“Leadership in a Jesuit institution is a vital role. As leaders, you are not here to garner glory, but to serve the student community,” said Fr Daniel Fernandes, Principal of St Joseph’s College at the inauguration of the Students Council here on Saturday. He was addressing a gathering of over 200 student leaders who were present at the investiture ceremony.

Speaking to the numerous elected student representatives, Fr Fernandes urged them to uphold the tenets of accountability and responsibility in the execution of their work. He emphasised the need for the Student Council members to be sensitive to the concerns of their fellow students. “It is your duty to make every student feel at home in the campus. If you are not able to represent their needs to the staff, you will be failing in your position,” he said.

Fr Staney D’Souza, Rector, St Joseph’s Indian Composite College, who was the Chief Guest at the function, also offered advice to the Student Council members for the forthcoming academic year. “Leaders become great when they create a vision for themselves and set out to actualise it in their daily life. Leadership is the ability to see possibilities around and recognise potential in yourself and in your companions,” he said.

Reflecting on the role of students in the administration and functioning of a college, Fr D’Souza used the analogy of teamwork in sports. “Education is not a 100 meter dash or a relay race. It is more like a three-legged race. Students and teachers must think and feel together to create an atmosphere conducive to growth,” he said.

The oath taking ceremony was administered by Syed Wajeed, Department of Microbiology to the academic representatives, by Godwin D’Souza, Department of Electronics for the class representatives of UG, by Dr Fariyal Shaikh, HOD of Hindi Department for the cultural representatives, Dr Beatrice Sequeira, Department of Microbiolgy for the class representatives of PG and Mr Newton, Department of Physical Education for the sports department.

All the students who were in attendance for the event were primed with a sense of eagerness towards carrying out their role in the coming academic year. As Suhas H.V., an academic representative from III PCM, pointed out, “We recognise that as members of the Students Council, we act as a bridge between other students and the staff. We hope to achieve this objective to the fullest.”

When asked to share their views about the college Vedha Nair from I CBZ, said, "I really liked the campus. As I come from a valley based college, I am very fond of nature. I had heard that the Science faculty is really good. So I opted for this college."

Aaron Abhishek from I VISCOM, said, "I did my PUC in St Joseph's College, so I am quite familiar with the surroundings and working of the college. I chose this field as I am interested in photography and also in animation. I also like doing a bit of reporting. I find the atmosphere very friendly."

Benita D, from I BCA, said, "St Joseph's is a well reputed college in India. It stands first in South India. I wanted to join Joseph's because it has good faculty and also eco-friendly atmosphere. I am happy to get into Joseph's and be a part of this college."

SJC pledges support for victims of torture

The victims of torture often go unnoticed and are often unheard because of lack of awareness about the issue in society. In an attempt to bring about awareness about the issue in College, the Centre for Social Concern (CSC), National Service Scheme (NSS) and Christian Students Association (CSA) organised a mime and a documentary screening in campus on Friday, June 24.

Azar Khan, President of CSC, pointed out that the events were being organised in order to observe the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. He said, "Many people do not know what torture actually is. Torture can be physical, emotional and even psychological in nature. It is our aim to put this across to students through mime and documentary."

He further added that a rally would be carried out from College to Town Hall on Saturday, demanding the ratification of the UN convention of torture by India and also urging the government to follow the D.K Basu guidelines on arrest, interrogation and detention.

Explaining the role of the NSS in conducting such programmes, J S Gladson, President of NSS, said, "It is very important to bring about awareness among youngsters. We have the power to make a difference and this is one such opportunity."

Students eagerly watched as performers showed different aspects of torture. Kiran Kumar Sen, from I CEZ, emphasised on the oppression women faced in the country. He said, "India is a male dominated society and women are victims of a lot of torture. This was aptly shown by the mime. The youth should take up responsibility against such crime."

Winds of change in campus

The new academic year has brought in a multitude of changes in the campus. From the newly painted walls to the spic and span toilets, SJC is on a constant drive to improve infrastructure and facilities for students.

A dedicated staff under the management of John Christy, Maintenance Officer, are rectifying all electrical and plumbing problems in the campus. He said, "We are fixing new electrical points wherever necessary and are also fixing any plumbing problems in the College." He further added that all the toilets were being given an acid wash, after which they would be cleaned twice a day to maintain hygiene.

Speaking about the role of students in maintaining cleanliness, Mr Christy said, "Hardwork is being put into cleaning the College. Students should maintain cleanliness the same way they would at home."

Cultural events are an integral part of the curriculum. In order to encourage cultural activities the Xavier Hall is being given a complete revamp. The hall will boast of a new sound system, stage lightings and also better acoustics. James J, in-charge of renovation, and his team, have been working round the clock to finish the work. "The hall will be much better than before. The interiors are being re-done to control echo and also to give the hall a new look." He added that the work in the Xavier Hall was in over-drive as it has to be completed by the end of the month.

Students with growling stomachs after a long day of lectures can now expect clean and hygienic food in the canteen. Asha Caterers, a well known catering service in the city, have taken charge of improving the canteen and providing fresh and delectable food to students. Hungry PG students may not have to make the long walk to the canteen anymore, as the management is planning to have a food counter in the PG block too.

Students who have seen the changes and transformation in the College are impressed by the work done by the management. Nikhil Muthukrishnan from III IES, said, "I find a lot of changes being done all around the College. The cleanliness in the campus and especially in the toilets is truly commendable."

Dr. (Fr.) Daniel Fernandes SJ will take over as Principal

As the new academic year begins, the college will have a new dynamic leader in the person of Dr. (Fr.) Daniel Fernandes SJ. Dr. (Fr.) Ambrose Pinto SJ will pass on the baton after eight years of service to Fr. Daniel Fernandes SJ. Fr. Daniel Fernandes SJ is no outsider to St. Joseph’s College. He has worked in St. Joseph’s Evening College, Bangalore and later in St. Joseph’s College of Commerce. He comes to St. Joseph’s College after spending nine years as Principal in St. Joseph’s College of Commerce besides an additional year of teaching there. A seasoned administrator, he has endeared himself to all as Principal of St. Joseph’s Commerce College.

Competent, capable and human, Fr. Daniel is very well-known for his human relationships and building up the infrastructure of the college. His administrative abilities have been recognized by all those who have worked with him. The college is bound to further progress and expand under his leadership and find a place as an internationally reputed college. A doctorate in folklore, he is a teacher of Kannada. He is well versed with local culture and literature and has his feet firmly on the ground. He was a gold medalist in M.A. folklore from the Mysore University and later completed his doctorate from the same University. He has been in National Assessment and Accreditation Council and has visited several colleges as peer team member as well as University Grants Commission teams for the extension of autonomy to colleges. He has publications to his credit. As he moves into the college, he will supervise the construction of the college hall along with several other responsibilities. We warmly welcome him and assure him of our wholehearted co-operation. St. Joseph’s College truly feels proud that the Management has made the right choice to entrust the college in the hands of a person who has proven credentials.

The college thanks Dr. (Fr.) Ambrose Pinto SJ who labored as Principal for the last eight years and expresses its gratitude to all that he did and for all that he has been to this institution.

Valedictory moments 2011

It was an emotional day for over 700 graduating students of SJC as they gathered for the valedictory function here on Saturday, April 9. They were seen in colourful attire cherishing memorable moments even as they took part in a very meaningful ceremony which included, among other things, blessing, receiving of memento (College logo) and lighting of candle to take Josephite pledge.

Eminent alumni, Mr Ramesh, IG-DIG of Karnataka Police, Mr Navin Kumar, bureaucrat and Mr Rayan, accomplished photographer and film maker, were felicitated by the Principal, Fr Ambrose Pinto. Each of them went down memory lane and shared with the audience some memorable moments when they were students at SJC. The audience burst into bouts of laughter when Mr Rayan revealed that he was the one who had placed a cracker in the men's toilet lighted with a agar batti.

Seminar on water conservation

The Zoology Department of SJC organised a two-day UGC sponsored seminar titled ‘Water Conservation and Rain Water Harvesting’ at here on Friday. The objective of the seminar was to emphasise the importance of water in human life and its conservation.

Dr Hariharan, water champion founder of Bio-diversity and Conservation of India Limited, was the chief guest for the event.

Geetha vishwanathan, HOD of department of Zoology, said, “World water day is celebrated all over the world this week. In the backdrop of that we are also conducting a seminar on water conservation this week. The seminar will create awareness among masses concerning the acute shortage of water and its effective conservation.”

She further added, “Water is a very important component for all the living organisms. The mismanagement of this vital resource by the humans has caused an immense damage to the balance of the planet earth. The need of the hour is that we all join our hands together and bring back water equilibrium in nature to save our lives as well as the future generations.”

Sebastian R, a III year CBZ student, said, “Life without water is unimaginable. It is our duty as responsible citizens to try and save water as much as we can. Basically water component plays enormous role in the existence of all living creatures. Hence water is considered as the mother of all components.”

He further said, “We should always bear in mind that every person of this planet should owe some responsibility to save water.”

Namritha from M S Ramaiah Degree College, who participated in the seminar, said, “Topic for the seminar was a contemporary one. Both the government and the public should take some measures to save the rain water which simply gushes down into our gutters.”

Students of 10 different colleges of the city participated in the seminar.

The tale of chirping birds in campus

Do you know that there are many migratory birds in our campus? Are you passionate about listening to their chirping and observing them for some time? If yes, then you should definitely come near the banyan tree in the quadrangle at the science block a little early than your usual college time.

The spring season is on and there are many different species of birds that come down to Karnataka. The banyan tree at the quadrangle is one of the main places where these birds settle. They come in groups of eight in the morning and would munch the fruits from this tree. They also assure that the campus is lively with their chirping right from early hours till the evening time.

Did I hear someone asking about the names of these birds? Well, the most attractive species amongst all these migrated birds is Rose Pastor, which is also called as Rose Starling. These birds are called so as their chest region is rosy in colour and they hail from Europe. Apart from Rose Starling, there are birds like Parakeets, Kites, Koyals and Falkens as well.

Prof. Wilson, HOD of Environmental Science department is one of those who is keenly observing these birds. He had much to say: “I have been observing these birds (Rose Starling) for the past few years and what I noticed was that they have come a little late this time. Usually, they come during February but this time, they reached here in the beginning of the month of March. They are expected to be here till April. But, I am not much sure as they came late this time. There are worms inside the fruit here and these birds eat them. They also get a lot of energy that they chirp the whole day long. Our students are doing some observations in this regard.”

“Earlier there were many birds which migrated from different places. Compared to last time, the number of birds has decreased. The reason may be the escalating traffic and other industrial developments,” said, Geetha Vishwanath, HOD of Zoology department.

She further added, “Students of Zoology department keep a watch on all types of bird species that come down to our college and they say it is interesting.”

In spite of the tight scheduled at college, students were also found spending some time in observing these migratory birds. “We notice many birds near the quadrangle and it is really interesting to observe them,” said, Vidya, a student from I CBBT.

Think globally and develop a global perspective, says top Jesuit.

The Superior General of the Society of Jesus Rev. Fr. Adolfo Nicholas has urged Jesuits and their collaborators – teachers, former students and well-wishers to be innovative, creative and critical in their educational processes and provide an education relevant for the times. Addressing a select group of teachers, former students and friends of the Jesuit institutions of Bangalore numbering 450 at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce on 26^th February 2011 he asked educators of Jesuit institutions to be aware of the superficialities of globalisation and not be carried away by changes.

While making a case for a new thinking on pedagogies given the changing times, he desired that Jesuit Education will not only provide education but a good education accessible to the poor as well and create men and women of analysis, mind and spirit to make their contribution to improve the quality of human living. Stressing the place of history in human thought, he stressed the relevance of history for a good education. Fr. Ambrose Pinto SJ, Principal of St. Joseph’s College, welcoming the Jesuit General described him as a visionary and a man on fire to serve God and humanity.

He was warmly welcomed by Fr. Vijayakumar Prabhu SJ, the Rector of St. Joseph’s institutions on behalf of the management, Sri David S, the Vice-President of the St. Joseph’s College Alumni on behalf of former students and Lawrence, a student of St. Joseph’s College on behalf of all students. Media professionals debate responsibility of media in emerging India

To create awareness and generate debate about recent controversies and the role of media, and sensitise students, the department of Communication of St Josephs College organised a seminar on the theme ‘The responsibility of media in an emerging India’ here on Friday. The chief guest for the seminar was Maharaja Pradyot Bikram Manikya, the King of Royal House of Tripura and the Editor of North East Times.

Addressing the seminar Fr Ambrose Pinto, Principal of SJC said, “There is a nexus between the media houses and the corporates. Reporting in India is highly communal, corporate and corrupt.” Speaking about various communal issues of the country he pointed out the Godhra case and said that the respective people involved in the carnage of Gujarat riots were not only considered heroes, but were also a part of the government.

The first session of the seminar was addressed by K.S Dakshina Murthy, the Editorial Consultant at The Hindu, who spoke about the phenomenon of Paid news and journalistic ethics’. The session was chaired by Prof. Syed Amjed Ahmed from the department of Communication of SJC. “Journalistic ethics, particularly paid news, is a very vast, nuanced area which is very difficult to judge and take action against,” said Mr Murthy.

Providing an insight into ‘News sources and journalist relations’, Prof. N. Ashok Kumar, Chairman of the department of Electronic Media, Bangalore University, spoke extensively about the credibility and confidentiality of the news source a journalist should maintain. “Cultivation of sources and maintaining them is the only hope for journalists,” said Mr Kumar. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Leela Rao, from the department of Communication.

Afternoon session started with a panel discussion about ‘The future of investigative journalism’. The chairperson for the event was Byatha N. Jagadeesha,, advocate of the High Court and Human Rights activist. The issue was discussed in detail by Sanjana, deputy editor of tehalka.com and Bansy Kalappa, special correspondent and chief reporter of News 9.

Nearly 200 people, mostly students from various colleges of Bangalore took part in the seminar.

Media must spread in rural areas, says Bikram Manikya

“Media needs to grow beyond urban centres and move to more rural places and places less known,” said Pradyot Bikram Deb Baraman, King of the Royal house of Tripura and the Editor of North East Times. He was addressing the students at the seminar on ‘The responsibility of media in an emerging India’.

Speaking about the situation in the media today, Mr Deb Barman spoke about how the vision had narrowed down, and how stereotypes had dominated our perception of the world. “North East is always viewed as this one block rather than the eight different states that constitute the north east region of the country,” he added. Pointing to the ignorance of people in respectable positions in media houses, he said, “A person from a big media house actually asked me if the capital of Nagaland is Sikkim.”

Suggesting reforms in the media, he emphasised the need for the media to have a more mature approach to issues. “Media today sells news rather than disseminate news to the public,” said Mr Deb Barman. He also added that people needed to be fearless even if it meant voicing an opinion against institutions like the army, because it was the right the people.

“A tree cannot become big if the roots are not strong,” he said, talking about the importance of having sound ethics and a good balance in reporting issues in the media. He further added that news needs to be based on facts devoid of personal emotions and one should not attack individuals.

Answering a query from a student as to why India was obsessed about Pakistan and not the Chinese threat, he said, “India has always been on the defensive with regard to China. Instead of bettering the life of its citizens by providing better infrastructure, they are concentrating more on limiting further insurgency in the country.” He further added, “The way India is approaching the issue of Chinese intrusion shows a complete lack of faith in its own population.”

Variety of biriyanis served at Muslim food fest

The aroma of the variety of biriyanis attracted scores of students to the Muslim cuisine fest organised in the campus on Tuesday. The event was organised by Social Zest, the Sociology Association of the College.

The fest consisted of ‘beef biryani’, ‘chicken biryani’, ‘mutton biryani’, ‘brinjal curry’, ‘raita’ and few other snacks which turned out to be quite an attraction for many students. The traditional attire worn by student organisers added to its uniqueness. Different decorations which included crafts, artefacts and other ornamental pieces that reflect the richness of Muslim culture adorned the venue.

Free copies of the English version of the Quran, the holy book of Muslims, were handed out to everyone at the fest. Azhar Khan, volunteer of Social Zest said, “The purpose behind organising such a fest was to showcase the Islamic culture and its influence on our literature, tradition and beliefs. We are distributing books in order to clear the misunderstanding amongst people about the Islamic religion.”

“Our college has very few Muslim students, because of which we wanted to give prominence to the community by organising this fest. Noticing its success there will be many more fests of this kind in the future,” said Dr Berin Lukas, Head of the Department of Sociology.

North East Tibetan cultures come alive at Footprints

Footprints 4.0, the North East and Tibetan cultural fest held here on Sunday had a royal touch of sorts with the presence of the King of the Royal House of Tripura Kirit Pradyot Deb Burman. He made the occasion even more inspirational with his thought provoking message to the hundreds of North East, Tibetan students gathered when he said that North East and Tibetan students when they go out of their states must be the ambassadors of their culture.

He said: “One should be proud of being an indigenous, as the Constitution puts it. North East students must be ambassadors of their particular state, wherever they go. When you go out of your state you not only study but you are studied as well.”

Speaking about the problems of North East, Mr Deb Barman said, “For the rest of the country people of North East are all same, though there are over 600 languages and hundreds of tribes. There seems to be lethargy among leaders of the country when it comes to the problems of the North East. As future leaders, students of North East must make a difference. People of the north east even if considered a backward group should come together to develop their states and voice their opinion.”

Welcoming the gathering, Principal Fr Ambrose Pinto said, “We are proud to have about 180 Tibetan students and several hundred North East students in our institution, who bring with them their traditional heritage and give us the broad perspective of society. They look alike but have different cultures which they will stage today. Each state has a different culture, tradition, food habit and yet they show a great level of oneness.” He further added, “Diversity and pluralism are pillars of Democracy. These values help in bringing about unity in society.”

The fest based on the theme ‘Breaking the barriers and building bridges’ focused on bridging the differences among the tribals of the North Eastern states and the others. This was well seen when the gathered crowd welcomed the plethora of traditional dances and music of the North East and Tibet. While different dance forms and music portrayed war, victory, love and sadness; the play on Irom Sharmila portrayed the strength and determination of the people. The air was filled with the aroma of delicacies of the indigenous tribes which was savored by one and all present and the crowd went dizzy when the students showcased their traditional attire in the much awaited ramp walk.

First rain: rainwater harvesting works wonders in PG centre

The city witnessed the first downpour of the year on Monday. The first rains have worked wonders at SJC PG Centre as the newly installed rainwater harvesting system (RWHS) was instrumental in filling both the sumps and a 5,000 litre external tank.

The rain not only filled the tanks, the overflow has percolated into the defunct bore well to which the water pipes were directed.

“St Joseph’s College has done a very wise thing by installing the RWHS. Through this, whenever there is a downpour one can easily save up to 20,000 litres of water easily,” said Jeff Delimos, the installer of the RWHS.

He further added, “These days we see a lot of scarcity of water everywhere. In that way, we are getting a huge amount of water every single day whenever there is a downpour, which is not just of a better quality but free of cost as well.”

“It’s a good thing for the environment and as our College has taken it, it’s really very commendable,” said Pritam of I MSW.

The demand for water is growing everywhere and with a population of more than six lakh people in Bangalore, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewage Board has declared that the total demand for water is 850 million litres per day. One of the best options to meet the demands of water scarcity is the RWHS.

Euphoric moments of Visages

One of the most prominent attractions for ‘VISAGES’ that was held in the campus on Saturday and Sunday was the presence of Miss Earth 2010, Nicole Faria, who inaugurated the fest. She was the chief guest for the day.

Rakesh J.E, the Cultural Secretary said, “The fest saw had varieties ranging from Indian devotional songs to western electric. The first day of the event ended with splendid performance of Indian theme dance. However our College team’s performance was the best to win the first place.”

He further added, “On Sunday, the cultural event started with Indian classical singing. The highlight event of the day was the street dance.”

“The fest ended with western electric music which was an innovation. Luckily our college was the one to win it,” said Dennis B, Vice President of Students’ Council.

SJC maintained the glory of the College by bagging most number of awards in the inter-collegiate cultural fest, “Visages” organised by the Cultural Committee of the College here on February 12 and 13.

The Cultural Committee in their attempt to bring the colleges of Bangalore on a common platform to showcase their talent and portray their innovative ideas on the theme ‘Confluence of culture organised around 34 events such as folk dance, mime, costume presentation, vegetable carving, essay writing, debate, mehendi designing which saw a huge participation. “Around 35 colleges from the city such as SJC Commerce College, Baldwins Girl’s College, Mount Carmel College etc. actively participated in the events, which was quite encouraging,” said Mohammed Saif, President of the Cultural Committee.

He further added, “We had a huge turnout of audience and participants on both the days, in spite of the air show in the city and the weekend. Essay writing competition saw the most number of eager participants. This was highly motivating for the enthusiastic organisers and volunteers of the Committee who had worked for days to make this event a great success.”

Earlier, the inauguration of the event was graced by Miss Earth 2010, Nichole Faria who added charm to the event. Hundreds of students thronged the venue to have a glimpse of the celebrity.

Activities

A keen sportsman, he was a junior representative in cricket and football. He is also a recipient of NE TV's Entrepreneur of the Year 2004, an award for young entrepreneurs of the northeast of India (for the first heritage hotel in the northeast of India). A social worker, he has worked in helping children and the elderly with constant charity and social get-togethers. He is also a music fan and was instrumental in bringing the American band Fire House to the Northeast for the first time. In perhaps the biggest concert yet in the Northeast, he invited both Fire House and White Lion to play at Shillong and Dimapur to packed audiences of over 42,000 and 17,000 respectively. The proceeds of the shows went to Providence School run by his ex-schoolteacher Br. D’ Souza. Along with education, the school also stresses vocational training for economically challenged children. The band White Lion spent some quality time with the children and teachers alike. Barman was also pivotal in promoting Indian Idol winner Sourabhee Debbarma.

In an interview, Pradyot Barman discussed his work with unprivileged children across the northeast and his desire to contribute more in the fields of health, education and rural development. He has been quoted as saying that his struggle is not against any political party but against the caste system and inequality, which he wants to eliminate. The new king has launched a magazine called The Northeast Today which covers topics such as politics, social development, education, music, and sports from around the region. He is a member in the executive council in the first constituted body of the Tripura Central University by India's Ministry of Education. He also continues to help underprivileged children through various charities and has been a vocal activist for drug addiction and AIDS.

The bomb blasts in Tripura revealed another side of Pradyot when he strongly condemned the incident, in which even his palace was not spared. He openly challenged the terrorists to take on the family openly. The humanitarian and social side of Pradyot was also evident when he visited the hospitals and helped the victims. The open challenge to the militants is the first of its kind by any royal family in India.

Politics, Media and Sports

There have been frequent talks about him joining politics, but he has constantly shied answering this query by saying contribution to the state can come in various means and not just only by politics. The magazine “The Northeast Today”, for which he is the Editor and Publisher is now the largest circulated local English magazine in the region. Recently the Maharaja has spoken about promoting the game of Football and other sports in the Northeast Region. He is supporting clubs and other youth activities in the region. It is reported that he will also be sponsoring the women's football team in Tripura. He is one of the youngest Kings in the country and also considered to be one of the most eligible bachelor in the country. The Tripura Dynasty is also the second oldest in the world from a single straight line, the present king being the 186th. Only the Mikado Dynasty from Japan have an older lineage.

In the year 2010, he presided over our College Day and we were proud to honour him as a distinguished former student who lived by the college motto of “faith and toil”. For three years, he lived as a hosteller and was proud of those experiences. Through his writings and life, he has been an inspiration.

Ambedkar’s life in graphic presentation

A distinctive book on Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar’s life titled ‘Bhimayana: Experiences of Untouchability’ was presented here on Tuesday.

Written by S Anand and Srividya Natarajan, the book presents a graphical account of Ambedkar’s life and his experience of growing as an untouchable from his childhood to adult life.

A salient feature of this book is the pictorial presentation of various facets of Ambedkar’s life in Gond art. The narrative pictures are done by award wining Pardhan Gond artists-couple Durgabai Vyam and Subhash Vyam.

Presenting the book the author Mr Anand said, “The book is being released in five different languages at present. I was inspired by the thought that there was no book that threw light on the ideologies and practices of Ambedkar, who is a driving factor in India today.”

He further added, “Very few people know about Ambedkar in India unlike Gandhiji. The point of the book is to also look into the personal life of Ambedkar. There is very little insight of Ambedkar’s engagement in prevention of untouchability.”

Following Anand’s presentation, Principal Fr Ambrose Pinto, spoke on caste dynamics and untouchability in India.

He said, “Untouchability is not the problem of the untouchables; it is the problem of the touchables. Issue of caste is the issue of sick minds and communities. Education has not done anything for the communal identity. Untouchability is the product of Hindu caste system. Efforts to change casteism should come from people like us.”

Earlier, the programme began with the traditional Parai music popular among Dalits. The presentation by writer-journalist Mr Anand explained the pictures relating to the life of Ambedkar. Brought out by his publishing house Navayana, the book sheds lights on the relatively unknown facets of Ambedkar.

The Dalai Lama weaved in humour and light heartedness during his speech, which kept the crowd attentive and amused throughout the programme.

While conveying that material possession does not give inner peace, he recollected an incident with an Archbishop, who would make others kiss his diamond ring. The Dalai Lama asked the Archbishop whether the ring ever returned him the affection. He could rather show this love to a pet which could at least lick him back and reciprocate the love. Upon hearing this remark the Archbishop called him “The mischievous Dalai Lama.”

Shedding light on why he called himself ‘the son of India ‘, he stated, “Physically I am Tibetan, but mentally every particle of my brain is filled with Indian culture, which is given to me by India daal and rice.”

He addressed all the young girls in the audience and told them the importance of inner beauty. He said that while testing this premise, he once told his friend that his wife was not very good looking. His friend replied that he cared not about her outer appearance, but her inner beauty. “I could argue no further,” he said.

Campus rises to the occasion to welcome the seer

The campus rose to the occasion to welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama who came to take part in the Josephite Summit here on Sunday. A group of Tibetan students worked relentlessly giving attention to minute details.

The Dalai Lama was offered a traditional welcome in the form of a folk dance which was followed by the symbolic ceremony of lighting the lamp. The four constituents of SJC- the management, the staff, the alumni and the students honoured the Dalai Lama in their own way.

Welcoming the Dalai Lama Fr Abrose Pinto, the Principal called the event an historic occasion. “The father of our nation was assassinated on January 30, 1948. Sixty two years later we have with us his holiness the Dalai Lama who galvanises the stand for the same cause. He is the universal Mahatma who embodies the struggle against repression,” he said.

In preparation for the event, appropriate security measures were put in place. Journalists and press persons of varied media houses of the city pooled in to cover the historic event.

Faculty members, alumni and students, along with their families, thronged the event to catch a glimpse of the great spiritual leader. “I have waited all my life to see the Dalai Lama. My husband has had a chance to meet him, but I have never had the opportunity to do so until today,” Tenzing Doma, the mother of a student who attended the event, said.

“This is the chance of the life time. Seeing His Holiness gave me the motivation and strength to deal with the daily struggles,” said Mary P of Central College.

The monk who wakes up at 3.30 a.m.

His Holiness, the Dalai Lama responded to the queries of the audience in an interactive session. Among the pool of questions that were asked he answered a few in his inimitable style.

When asked about the interrelation between Science and Buddhism, he called upon people to accept facts after analysing them rather than accepting on their face value. “Buddhism literature imbibes in itself scientific facts and also includes streams like Cosmology, Neuro-biology, Quantum Physics and Psychology as the four corners of religion. Internal Science comes from tradition,” he said.

Enlightening the crowd on ways of controlling anger His Holiness said, “It takes long time to control anger, but the intensity can be reduced.” He further added, “A long lasting anger results in hatred and ill feeling.”

One of the questions was how he spent his personal time. He mentioned elaborately about his daily course and his duties as a monk. The audience indeed was enthused to hear that he got up as early as 3.30 in the morning and took a heavy breakfast. “This is because I do not take my dinner,” he said with a toothy smile.

When questioned on the materialistic West influencing the young and ways to overcome it, he said that materialistic gain was just an illusion and would not give people the inner peace they desired. He added, “We must take a holistic view of life and not give priorities to materialistic aspects.”

Answering the question about broken families and the effect on children, the spiritual leader raised concerns about the growing number of divorces in the world, particularly in the West. Though it was a tough situation for the young minds to overcome, “sadness should give the victim inner strength,” he said.

Dalai Lam graces Josephite Summit

He is acknowledged to be the universal apostle of peace and compassion. He calls himself a simple monk, but his ideologies and teachings are anything but simple. Addressing a gathering of over 3000 eager people at the SJC College grounds, His Holiness the 14^th Dalai Lama of Tibet, imparted his experiences about peace and harmony as the honoured chief guest at the Josephite Summit held on Sunday.

The Dalai Lama touched upon a wide spectrum of topics that centred on humanity. His speech was punctuated with a sense of humour, in addition to providing an in depth insight into the human condition. Speaking foremost about the contemporary times, he stated that the 20^th century had witnessed more than 200 million people being massacred through violence. “Highly advanced technology was used for destruction rather than to fix human problems. Whether the 21^st century is more peaceful, compassionate and constructive or repeats the mistakes of the previous century is a responsibility that rests on the shoulders of today’s youth,” he said.

Urging the young students to carry the fragile mantle of the future forward, he mentioned the tenets that are essential for this purpose. “Inner strength and self confidence are the qualities that every individual must possess. In order to achieve these two, one must have the basics of honesty, truth and will power.” He further said, “If a person is self-centric, he cannot have true concern for the well being of others.”

Reflecting on the importance of education in modern context, he said, “The very purpose of education is to reduce the gap between appearance and reality. According to Buddhist perspective, ignorance is the root of all misery.” He added, “Knowledge exists in three levels. Firstly, learning from others, followed by self-analysis and introspection and lastly, conviction to what is learnt. This knowledge should be applied in a holistic way in order to create a happier and more meaningful society.”

Calling himself a “son of India”, he shed light on the country that had paved the way for the existence of multiple religions. “For virtues of ahimsa and religious harmony, India is the best example for the rest of the world,” he added.

Speaking to the Tibetan student community in particular, he encouraged them to keep the spirit of the Tibetan struggle alive, and said, “Practice self-discipline. Be aware not only of your immediate surroundings, but the larger picture as a whole”

Book on environment economics released

A book that provides a comprehensive discussion on environmental economics called ‘Economics of Environment’ was released here on Monday. Dr Subhashani Muthukrishnan, professor of Economics has authored the book.

Dr Chandrakant, professor and university head of Agriculture Economics and leader of the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resources at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore released the book.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Chandrakant said, “It is not easy to write a book like this. The important issue here is that the book is written by an Indian and has been written in an Indian language that will help students to understand these environmental issues.”

“This book focuses on the welfare of the environment. It understands poverty and the environment and how people misuse resources at times,” he added.

The book deals with various aspects such as population and environment, market and environmental resources, degradation of the environment, sustainable development and various other environmental issues. It also deals with national and international environmental issues and legislations.

Making a presentation of the contents of the book, Dr Muthukrishanan, the author, said that the book discussed in detail the issue of market failure externality and welfare with regard to the environment. “The book has a detailed bibliography which encourages students to continue reading for the understanding of this subject. This book is for undergraduate and postgraduate students of economics.”

He has become a celebrity, at least for now

The sudden rise to celebrity status is putting Keshav Krishnamurthy, otherwise sedate studious student of III HEP, into an uneasy situation. His phone has not stopped ringing from the time people came to know about his rare feat of scoring 99.96 per cent in the Common Admission test (CAT).“Thankfully I had a breather of sorts today and I hope I will be left to myself,” said Keshav with a grin.

He was born in Bhubaneshwar, the capital city of Orrisa and moved to Bangalore with his family soon after his 12th class. “My father works in a software company and my mother is a teacher. We are all surprised over my result, because I had not really expected to score this much. I studied the last minute but I did take mock tests now and then which have probably been a lot of help,” said Keshav.

Maintaining a sense of calm over his recent success and the attention it has garnered, he said, “I am in a strange situation since. I am overwhelmed by everyone walking up to me with a warm smile and congratulating me. There is one more round of test left after which the admission procedure takes place.”

Speaking about Keshav’s Achievement, Vinay S S of III EPS said, “He is a very studious person. I see him always talking to teachers. He even has a good hold on English language. He has set an example for us. I am going to follow his footsteps and work harder from now on.”

“I knew very well, he had the potential to do well in life, but it was a surprise to see it happen so early. He would always ask good questions in class and involve actively in activities. I am very impressed with him,” said Dr P E Somaiah, lecturer of Political Science department.

The other teachers also seemed elated at his rare feat. “I knew he had to write CAT this year. He is a well read student and very curious to know about the text background. It was great news for the whole college,” said Dr Lata Radhakrishnan of Economics department.

Students taste traditional cuisines at Ahara Mela ‘10

In a world that thrives on fast food, the Kannada Sangha of SJC brought back the taste of traditional cuisine at a food fest held here on Thursday. Ahara Mela’ 10, as it was titled, the fest was full of mouth watering home made food items that were sold in record time.

There were nine teams who took part in the fest, and they brought food items cooked from home. Jolada roti, akki shavige, chandrahara, maddhur vade, vangibath were some of the items that were displayed. “This is organised every year, but this time we are conducting it in a bigger way and it’s our first step towards our mega fest Kanasu,” said Ravikiran, president of Kannada Sangha.

The food fest was conducted during the lunch hour and one could witness large number of students rushing in to savour their favourite dishes. There were also lots of traditional games such as kuntebille, chowkebara, pagadeyaata arranged to entertain the students.

“It’s nice to have food fests like this, as they bring in a lot of traditional culture to the limelight and my favourite is joladha roti with brinjal curry,” said Dr Beatrice, HOD of Microbiology department.

The most interesting part of the food fest was the exhibition of different models that depicted the everyday life of village people. Earthen vessels (mud toys) like grinder, stove, idli maker etc were showcased to give a glimpse of the traditional forms of cooking.

This fest is excellent and I’m very delighted to be part of it. All the food items are cooked exceedingly well by the students and I feel as if I am in my home town, having my granny’s preparations. Today’s generation forgets the traditional food and prefer fast food; so this is a nice way to bring students back to home made delicacies,” said Dr Poornima, lecturer of Kannada department.

Students walk backwards for AIDS

Around 100 students from various departments and student associations such as National Social Service Scheme (NSS) and Josephs Aids Awareness Movement (JAAM) took part in the ‘AIDS awareness backwards march’ organised by JAAM. The march began from the campus and moved all the way till St Josephs Pre University College (SJPUC) on Residency Road.

“This has been the third consecutive year that this event is taking place. It was a very beautiful way in which this rally was executed in memory of Mrs Barbara Naidu who was the founder of JAAM. May her soul rest in peace,” said Dr Betty Daniel, department of Botany.

Students finally gathered at the SJPUC campus, formed a circle and sang melodious songs such as “Heal the world” and “We shall overcome”, along with a moment of silent prayer.

The organisers held that the backwards march signified the resolve that people must not show their backs to other people who are HIV positive.

Students held several placards which included slogans such as “AIDS is just a disease, not a curse” and “Let our motto be challenging, not escaping”.

The coordinator of the event, Renee D’Souza, from the department of Mathematics said, “So many students are now aware of AIDS and as they go out, they will spread the word and create more awareness.”

Students exhibit innovative models at social-science fest

Ever thought of growing mushrooms in your backyard in a stack of hay, using helmets with LED lights, using your ordinary camera for high definition photography or visualising our city in the next ten years. These were some of the innovative ideas that the students demonstrated in campus at the Social and Science exhibition here on Monday. The two-day fest which began on Monday witnessed many participants with over 130 exhibits from the natural science and physical science departments, humanities section and the Hindi department.

One of the exhibits ‘ethno cultural plants from the North East’ had a variety of medicinal plants found in the North East region of the country. “We got the plants from our place and had a little difficulty in preserving them as they do not get adjusted to the Bangalore weather very easily,” said Thomas Tulgnung of II CBBT.

“Many people are not aware of our culture and traditions. By putting up an apparel stall we want the students to identify our culture and traditions. Apparel is a way for people recognise others and their cultures,” said Sonam, II BSW who was part of the Tibetan and North East apparel stall.

The exhibition showcased some very unique ideas like growing mushrooms in your garden, high definition photography, G-MET stall which showed how to connect your helmet to a global positioning system (GPS).

“It was very pleasant to see students putting in so much of effort and come up with so many innovative ideas. Even though their ideas may not work in the long run, to see students work so hard is very pleasing,” said Dr Koppikar, department of Chemistry.

This ‘Parliament’ session was sans boycotts and squabbles

It was a Parliament session; but unlike a typical Parliament session in the Centre, there were no shouting of slogans, no charging to the well of the House, no tearing of documents and, most importantly, no boycotts. Rather there was good discussion of issues, debates and a rare decorum followed with precision.

All this took place when the Political Science students of SJC came together to hold a mock session of the Parliament here on Monday, January 10.

The programme was inaugurated by Principal, Fr Ambrose Pinto. The major attraction of the event was that the students enacted the roles of President, Vice-President, Speaker, Prime Minister, Opposition Party members etc. Typical Parliament logistics were in place as the ruling and the opposition party members sat on either side of the House.

“For the first time in our country an indigenous Influenza A H1N1 vaccine is being developed which will be available this year,” said the President in his presidential address. He said that food security could be ensured only through sustained effort at increasing agricultural productivity combined with a comprehensive reform of the Public Distribution System and open market intervention. He also added that India should keep a constant watch and innovate against global terrorist groups. “My Government is committed in ensuring early passage of Women’s Reservation Bill which was introduced in the Rajya Sabha in May 2008. I would urge you to accord special attention to this critical proposal,” said the President, Keshav of III HEP.

Rise in food price, skyrocketing of onion and garlic price, people dying of cold weather conditions and left wing extremism in North-east part of the country were some of the issues that were raised during motion of thanks event. The Prime Minister (Vanissa, III EPS) and the Home Minister (Thejaswini, III HEP) responded to the questions saying that the rise in price of food items was everywhere in the world and it was the same in India as well. The Prime Minister also said that the present scarcity of onion was a creation by certain retailers who had hoarded large quantity of onion. He also added that Government had decided to avail services from the NGOs to rescue people who were suffering from extreme cold.

Regarding the Naxal issues, the Home Minister defended saying that the Government was holding discussions with all the groups, and in addition to this, the Government had also dispatched additional para-military forces to these states.

“The main objective of the event was to develop interest in national issues among the students. Next time when they read a news story with national importance, they would soon re-collect it as they have enacted it,” said P E Somaiah, programme coordinator and faculty member of Political Science department.

The students were found actively participating in the event. “It was a beautiful experience and we had the feeling that we were in the Parliament,” said Karthik of I EPS, a member of the model Parliament programme.

Media are unelected opposition leaders, opines Prof. Govind Rao

Are the media discharging their duties as expected of them? Are they being responsible at a critical time as these? What are the trends and opportunities available for young media aspirants in India today? These were some of the issues discussed and debated at the Outlook 2011- Media Matters, seminar held here on Saturday, January 8.

The seminar was organised by MOP Vaishnav College for Women, Chennai in collaboration with St Josephs College, Bangalore. The theme of the seminar was ‘Trends and Opportunities in Media’ and a number of speakers from a wide array of media related backgrounds shared their expertise on the subject matter.

The Chief guest for the event G.K Govind Rao, an actor and activist, in his inaugural address explored the role of media in a democracy. He said, “The media plays the role of an unelected opposition leader in a democracy. It should not be partisan. They must not take a stand for or against the party in power, but rather for the issue at hand.” He added, “The media has the dual role of providing knowledge and sharing experience. It should help the reader understand the past and visualise the future.”

Shedding light on the values that the media must propagate, he said, “The tenets of a democratic society include justice and equity. But for years, we have inherited feelings of superiority and inferiority. The media must mercilessly point out the kind of society we are trying to continue. The media must not cater to the audience’ taste, rather it should create new ones. It must help the youth think differently.”

Fr Ambrose Pinto, Principal of St Josephs College, who presided over the event, said, “There is a close nexus of the media with the corporate and political world. This marks the imminent death of the people’s media. The media today is communal, corrupt and commercial. What we should have in its place is a people-centric media which is concerned, compassionate and conscious.”

The speakers for the event were Prakash Belawadi, a journalist and film director, TNA Perumal, a wildlife photographer, Sourabh Panjwani, Post Doctoral Researcher working for Microsoft Research India and Sneha Iype, Executive producer, Nirvana Films. Each of these speakers shared the prevailing trends and presented the various opportunities that exist in their fields.

‘Religion to faith’ book released

‘From Religion to Faith’ a book edited and introduced by Dr Fr Ambrose Pinto, Principal of St Joseph’s College (SJC) and Dr Etienne Rassendren, English Professor at SJC, was released here on Thursday. The book presents a collection of testimonies and multi-religious experiences by the staff and students of SJC.

Rasheed Kappen, journalist from Deccan Herald, Dr Manu Chakravarthy, Professor from NMKRV College, Fr Vijay Kumar Prabhu, Rector, Fr Jerome D’Souza were the distinguished guests present at the book launch.

Mr Kappen quoting Dr Etienne’s words from the book which struck a chord with him, he said, “Religions are actually confined with culture.”

He also spoke about Islam and said that if there was no dissent there would not have been the formation of the Shias and Sunnis and different schools of thought.

Speaking about the book, Fr Jerome D’Souza said that the book had essays written by Muslims, Christians, Hindus, and agnostics. Expressing his pleasure for having been associated with the book, he said, “Religion is a way in which religious consciousness of humanity is expressed and religious consciousness is part of human consciousness.”

He also added that religious consciousness somehow became narrow and limited and it had an aspect of mystery.

Manu Chakravarthy who critiqued the book said, “This book itself is a testimony of testimonies. The important feature of this book is that it is very open. Secondly, this book is also open to interrogation.”

Commending the effort of the students, he said that none of the essays were absurd and abstract. “All of them have sprung from a personal experience with his or her religion.”

College pays homage to Nivyadita

The College paid homage to Nivyadita Pandiyean, student of II EPS, who died in a road accident on Monday, December 20. Principal, vice Principal, staff members and many students gathered at a prayer meet held here on Wednesday.

“When you live in the hearts of those you love, remember then you will not die,” said a tearful Catherine from II EPS, even as she recalled unique moments with her friend Nivyadita.

Fr Clarence, the vice Principal in his address spoke of how the departure of Nivyadita had created a vacuum that could not be filled. He led the students in prayers for both Nivyadita and her family.

“Nivyadita may have died in the sense we understand, but I believe there is a new kind of existence in which she lives,” said Principal, Fr Ambrose Pinto. He further said, “While I pray for Nivyadita and her family, I also pray for all of us that none of us may be afraid of dying, as death is life in a new form of existence.”

Sumantho Mondol from II EPS, said, “Nivya was our delight. She laughed at all my silly jokes.” He further added on a philosophical note, “If tears could build a stairway, and memories were a lane, we would walk right up to heaven and bring you back again.”

The students lit candles and offered floral tributes to their friend, Nivyadutta.

Accident

Nivyadita met with an accident as the bike in which she was riding pillion skidded and she fell while she was on her way back from a friend’s birthday party. The onlookers immediately rushed her to a close by hospital. Since there were no external injuries she was given first aid. But on realising that her pulse and blood pressure rate were dropping, the hospital staff immediately asked her father to rush her to St John’s Hospital. Nivyadita died on the way.

Stanly James, another student who was riding the bike suffered minor injuries.

She was a dancer

Nivyadita was born on December 6, 1991 to Soundara Pandiyean and late Udaya Kumari. She did her schooling from St Charles School, Bangalore and later went on to do her PUC at Mount Carmel College. She then joined St Joseph’s College for her degree.

“In spite of the tragic demise of her mother some months ago, Nivya didn’t lose hope. She took care of her father and brother during these difficult times,” said Salomi of II EPS.

Nivyadita was known as an active, creative girl with an expertise at dance. She loved both Indian and Western dance styles. “She would dance in seven different styles,” said Salomi in her introduction.

The prayer ceremony was led by the students of II EPS. Nivyadita’s father Soundara Pandiyean and her brother were present during the prayer meet.

II EPS student of SJC dies in accident

Shree Nivyaditha S of II EPS died in a fatal accident in the city on Monday. The accident took place when the two wheeler in which she was riding pillion lost control and she was thrown out due to the impact. She sustained serious internal injuries. Though she was rushed to St John's Hospital, the doctors could not revive her and she succumbed to her injuries.

Ms Nivyaditha is survived by her father and brother. Her mother had passed away nine months ago. The rider, Stanley James has sustained injuries and has been admitted to the hospital.

Principal, staff and the students have offered their condolences. A prayer meeting to remember Nivyaditha was held in the campus on Wednesday.

The two-day SJC sports meet concluded today witnessed fierce competition among Josephites in events such as long jump, short put, tug-of-war and relay.

Binoy Mathew of II M Sc Computer Science and Rakshitha of I MEC emerged as the fastest runners in 100 metres race. In 4x100 metre relay Arokyaraj, Aburvaraj, Stanley and Vinod Rosario of II EPS were the winners while Maria Shalini, Janitha, Suptha and Andria of PMC won women’s 4x400.

Students cook food without fire

Have you ever thought of cooking delicious cuisines without fire? The Kannada Sangha of SJC organised a competition called ‘Cooking without fire’ here on Wednesday where delicious cuisines were prepared without fire. Students from various departments were found actively participating in the event.

The competition was conducted during the lunch hour attracting a huge crowd. Nine teams took part in the event. Fruit salad, nutro fruto, masti curd, jhum jhum champakali, ragi pan cake, desi corn, date roll were some of the food items that were prepared by the students on the spot without fire. “I am very excited, because here we are cooking without fire and it is something very unique,” said Syeda of II PEM.

Bharathy of III PMC, Vice -President of Kannada Sangha, said that the results of the competition would be out next week. The judges were Reene D’Souza and John Binze from Maths department. Judges were also all smiles after tasting different food items.

“I am very happy to see these children cooking food on the spot, especially ragi cake and date roll,” said Ms D’ Souza, one of the judges.

Studetns light candles for human rights

Celebrating the International Human Rights Day, the South India Cell for Human Rights Education and Monitoring (SICHREM), St Joseph's College (SJC) and a few other city-based colleges and Long Island University, organised a week long event to create an awareness amongst people about their rights as human beings. The event ended with a ‘walk for rights’ rally and a ‘candle light vigil’ on Saturday. The rally began at SJC where around 200 students, along with members of Falun Dafa, an Association that strives to bring about harmony through meditataion and gentle movements, walked with banners and posters all the way to Town Hall.

“This is a students’ initiative and that is the specialty of this movement. We are determined to bring about a change in society and we will stand against any force to ensure that change takes place,” said Azhar Khan, the Vice President of Centre for Social Concern (CSC), SJC. “What we are igniting today will be a big fire tomorrow and as a member of civil society it is my responsibility to give back to society what I have taken from it,” he added.

On reaching Town Hall, the students of SJC also put forth a street play on female infanticide signifying that our very right as human beings is taken away even before we are born. The play was followed by a candle light vigil and an oath taking ceremony.

Incidentally, the college in collaboration with SICHREM offers a diploma course in human rights studies at St Joseph’s Evening College. “Many documentaries are screened regarding untouchability, caste system etc. Through this course we try to create an atmosphere to make people aware of their rights as citizens,” said Mr Khan.

Anti-corruption baton comes to SJC

Anti-corruption baton rally reached St Joseph’s campus on Thursday. The baton has been going around different colleges in Bangalore to bring awareness about the escalating corruption in the state.

Azhar Khan, the Vice President of Centre for Social Concern (CSC) said, “We have witnessed enough of corruption. It is high time to eliminate corruption at all levels from local self-government to national level. We invite college students to participate in an anti corruption rally and send out a loud and clear message Saaku (Enough!).”

“We encourage students to take part in the protest, not to support corruption or indulge in bribery," said Lok Satta member Arvind Kejriwal, who is a coordinator for the event. He also pointed out the instance that a policeman had demanded Rs 500 to carry the banner ‘Saaku’ inside the Chinnaswamy stadium on December 7. “We should neither indulge in corruption nor give bribes,” he said.

Varun Jagannath, the co-ordinator of National Service Scheme (NSS), said, “We have to actively participate in this rally and protest against corruption.”

The final rally will be held on December 11, the World Anti-corruption Day. It begins at 9.30 a.m. from Kanteerava stadium and ends at Shanti Nagar grounds.

Students fast for human rights

Irom Sharmila is a civil rights activist and journalist from the state of Manipur. She has been fasting since November 4, 2000 till date, demanding the withdrawal of Armed Forces (special powers) Act (AFSPA).

In order to commemorate International Human Rights day which falls on December 10, a hunger fast in solidarity with Irom Sharmila was organised at MG square on Wednesday. The participants came together to fight against ASFPA and other repressive laws in the state of Manipur.

K P Sasi, a documentary film maker, said, “AFSPA is undemocratic and unconstitutional. It is the responsibility of the entire civil society all over the country to see to the removal of ASFPA.”

He further added that ASFPA had increased insurgency and most people who had been killed had nothing to do with insurgency.

‘Root out the poison of communalism’

A rally against communalism and for national integration was organised by the NSS and CSC departments here at St Joseph’s College. The rally termed as “Black Day” marked the commemoration of the International Human Rights Day which is celebrated annually across the world on December 10.

Father Ambrose Pinto, Principal of SJC encouraged the students to denounce communalism and support secularism. “All those who create trouble are not citizens, they are anti-nationalists. Denounce anyone who creates violence and discriminates on grounds of caste, creed and religion,” said Father Ambrose Pinto.

Around 100 students joined the march from St Joseph’s campus to Town Hall. They raised the slogan ‘Root out the poison of communalism’

“The march is all about disapproving communal violence and promoting national integrity. In India, people are exploited in the name of communalism,” said Gladson, the vice-president of the NSS.

The march was followed by a candle light vigil to show SJC‘s support for secularism against communalism.

Kannada Sangha observes Rajyotsava day

The Kannada Sangha celebrated Kannada Rajyotsava and honoured Fr Ambrose Pinto, Principal of St Joseph’s College, for the Karnataka Rajyotsava award he received, here on Friday. The award was presented to him by the Karnataka State Government on November 1, for his contributions in the field of Social Service.

The Chief Guest for the event was Fr Jerome D’souza, Scripture scholar at the Regional Theology Centre, Anekal. Dr Vijayraghavan, Head of the Kannada Department and Dr Poornima, the Kannada Sangha Coordinator, were also in attendance.

Speaking on the occasion, Fr D’Souza said, “Education is the most efficient institution. It provides the strength to lead a fuller life, and Fr Ambrose champions these tenets.”

Addressing the audience, Fr Pinto said, “Life is fruitful when it is spent in the service. Concern and compassion are essential for our existence.”

This event also flagged off the beginning of about 15 to 30 inter-class competitions which will be conducted over the course of the next two weeks. “Essays, debates, collage making and a photography exhibition are just some of the events that will be organised. The activities are centered around promoting folk culture and arts. The purpose behind them is to expand the horizons of the Kannada language,” said Ravikiran, III PEM, President of the Sangha.

The programme also included a dance performance by Navyashree from I BVC. Fr D’Souza honoured the Principal with a garland and a shawl.

Human Rights week inaaugurated

The social concerns of the College were yet again in focus as the 10-day Human Right week was inaugurated here on Wednesday. The event is organised in collaboration with South India Cell For Human Rights Education and Monitoring (SICHREM) and Indian Social Institute (ISI).

The UN slogan ‘SPEAK UP STOP DISCRIMINATION’ was emphasised throughout the event. The delegates spoke about the importance of Human Rights in the present Scenario. Dr Fr George, director of ISI called upon students to fight for Human Rights.

“If we don’t stop discrimination right now, I think, we would build a wrong India. As youngsters you should stand against such discrimination,” said Mr Mathew Philip, director of SICHREM. He also added his childhood experiences of hard struggle to substantiate the importance of Human Rights in the lives of every human being.

music and choreography was composed by students themselves, added colours to the event. Towards the end of the programme, the chief guests and the students were asked to sign on the piece of cloth which said ‘Speak Up Stop Discrimination’.

“Such events are very good as they can create awareness among people about the importance of Human Rights and thus they can speak up when their rights are denied,” said Aneesh of II PMC.

AIDS awareness through play on campus

To create awareness amongst students of SJC about HIV/ AIDS, members of Joseph’s Aids Awareness Movement (JAAM) enacted a street play in campus on the occasion of World Aids Day on Wednesday. The play ‘Yaake Heege’, witnessed by many students, carried the message that one must empathise with AIDS patients and not sympathise with them.

“Through this play we wanted to throw light on HIV/AIDS and wanted students to be more aware and cautious about AIDS,” said Nikitha, student coordinator of JAAM.

There were many food stalls with a variety of cuisines that attracted the crowd. The proceeds of the food stalls will be forwarded to NGOs that work with AIDS patients.

The members of JAAM recently visited orphanages like Infant Jesus home, Snehadan and leprosy center Sumanahalli, where they interacted with the AIDS affected patients.

Alumni/ae rocks evening at reunion

They may have probably run around trees together, had common tea breaks, practiced dance steps, or perhaps, discussed about their future with each other at some point when they were on the campus in their yesteryears.

Such and many more nostalgic moments were recreated at St Joseph’s College on Sunday when over 300 old students gathered for the annual reunion.

Organised and hosted by the Alumni Association of the College, indeed the alumni/ae rocked the evening. Young, old, women, some with their family and kids, came together to feel the bond of being a proud Josephite and none could resist the temptation of shaking a leg or two for a dance finale that complimented the whole day’s events.

At the inauguration, Principal Fr Ambrose Pinto said, “A College is known by its strong alumni. St Joseph’s is fortunate to have one. The alumni association of the College has done so much for the College and has proved that together we can really do much.”

The President of the Association, Mr Lakshminaryan said that the College was really the source behind all the success that individual students who passed out from here had achieved. “We are here today with all our credentials because of our alma mater,” he opined.

Later on it was fun all the way. Groups of batches were seen huddling together and cherishing their glorious moments in the College. Some of them were meeting each other after many years. The participants ranged from the batches as old as 1962 to those who passed out just recently.

It was a perfect time for the reunion of old students. “For the first time I attended the alumni function. This was the place for young and old students to mingle freely,” said Mathew Cruz who graduated from 1970 batch.

“It is very well organised and this association should become more popular. More and more students should participate in this reunion,” added Mathew Cruz.

“I had a great evening today. I love participating in music and dance. After a long time I got chance to dance with my old buddies. Great fun even at my age of 63 years of life,” said, Prakash Murthy from 1970 batch.

It was a grand evening not only for the old ones but for passed out from the College just recently as well. “I was very happy to attend this function and I enjoyed the evening dance which was indeed unique with young and old students dancing without hesitation,” said, Priya who graduated in 2008.

“It was one of the best days of my life. It was absolutely lovely. More than the studies, I cannot forget the enjoyment I had in this College, with my teachers and my lovely friends. Now I met them after a long time,” said, Sandeep S who finished his graduation in 2007.

Chilled beer, multi-course lavish spread of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals, funny games and, of course, foot-tapping music all added to the mood of the day.

Exam ‘fever’ sets in

Exam season is fast approaching, so is the anxiousness among students. Incessant trips to the library, frequent visits to the photocopy place, several cups of caffeine have become a part of every student’s routine these days. Many are anxious whether they would be able to live up to the expectations of their peers, parents and teachers.

Bincy Mathew, a student of II MSW, said, “It is a hectic and stressful time of the year. Continuous assessment makes it difficult for me to prepare for my exams.”

Nikhil, a student from III IES, said, “I've somehow managed to scrape through all my previous semesters with a pretty decent score. But this semester, it’s like a big nightmare to me.”

UGC Committee on Autonomy Status inspects College

The University Grants Commission (UGC) appointed Autonomy Status Committee came on a day’s visit to St Josephs College (SJC) on Monday as part of the renewal of Autonomous status to the College. The expert committee consisted of Prof Afshar Alam, Chairman, Dr Suhas Pednekar and Dr Vaishali Pradhan, members, Prof B.C. Prabhakar, University nominee member and Dr K.P.Singh, member secretary of UGC. The assessment began with a seminar during which Fr Ambrose Pinto, Principal of SJC, along with the heads of various departments and staff officials took part.

“The seminar featured a documentary about the College. Later, there were discussions and clarifications about examinations, academic syllabus, libraries, staff remuneration, laboratories and admission procedures. This assessment is for the renewal of Autonomy to the College and we have done our best to showcase the works of our College,” Said, Dr Latha Radhakrishnan, Head of Economics Department.

The expert committee visited all the departments to assess and evaluate their working. They observed the PG and the Research centre, especially Micro Biology, Mass Communication and Chemistry labs, as well.

“This visit by the UGC officials is an important milestone for the College. The assessment will go on for the day, where the expert committee will evaluate and assess our works. There were suggestions given by the officials to the College and we will work on it shortly,” said, Dr Mohan Das, Department of Chemistry, who co-ordinated the entire exercise.A short cultural programme was also held to show case multi-culturalism of the College.

“The inspection is going on all well as of now, We are preparing for the interaction with the expert committee, where we will exhibit the works produced by our students under our guidance,” said, Dr Subhashini, Lecturer, Department of Economics.

A member of the expert committee said, “Overall the experience at St Joseph’s was satisfactory.”

“Technology must help improve quality of life”

“All our technology should be aimed at improving the quality of life. The purpose of science is to include those who are excluded from development,” said Fr Ambrose Pinto, Principal of St Joseph’s College (SJC).

He was speaking during the inauguration of the Academy lecture workshop conducted by the Botany Department here on Friday. The topic of the seminar was the ‘Recent molecular biological trends in infectious diseases and cancer.’

Reflecting on importance of the workshop’s focus, Fr Pinto added, “Cancer research is the frontier area affecting human kind today.”

Students from 17 colleges across the city attended the event. Dr Betty Daniel, Organising Secretary of the event, said, “The purpose of the seminar is to expose our young minds to the recent developments in molecular biology. Students can use the information to innovate ideas and execute them in future research.”

The speakers at the event were renowned scientists and researchers Dr Ravi V from the Dept of Neurovirology, NIMHANS, Dr Sudhir Krishna, from the Dept of Cellular Organisation and Signaling, NCBS, Dr Ravi Kumar from Xcyton Diagnostics and Dr Annapoorni Rangarajan from the Dept of Molecular Reproduction, IISc.

“The comparison between the old research and the new findings was fascinating. The workshop was interactive and interesting. We were given questions to think about for the next day’s session, so we have more to look forward to,” said Graham Wungrampha, a student of III MCZ from SJC.

“The topic of discussion is what drew me to the workshop. It was a very enlightening event that shed light on the landmark developments in cancer research,” said Sophia P from T John College.

SJC winners at ‘Exalted’ fest

The College won the rolling trophy for the fourth consecutive year at the ‘Exalted’ Gospel Fest on September 15. The event was hosted by Bishop Cottons Women’s Christian College.

Ten winning titles out of the 11 events were bagged by the college. Christ University was the runners up at the event.

Kiran Jeevan from the MSW Department of SJC was the chief guest of the event. In his address he said, “Such fests should be conducted by the churches in Bangalore; however, Christian colleges in the city have come forward to take up this initiative.”

All events were based on the theme, ‘Arise and Shine’. Sixteen colleges participated in the fest.

The students took active participation in most of the events.Andrew Kutty(IIIrd EPS) bagged I place in Quiz competition . G Shyam(III BCA) was recognized as the Best Instrumentalist in Western Music.

The College came first in Street Dance and Collage competition held at M S Ramaiah College.

Malemngauba was awarded Best Male Singer at St Johns College.

College takes lead to respond to Beggars' Colony issue

In a story of catastrophic negligence and apathy that sent ripples across the city, 12 people died in a matter of 14 hours at the Beggars’ Rehabilition Centre on Magadi road on Monday. The causalities had fallen severely ill after they were served lunch on Independence Day. What compounded their misery was that they were left unattended, even as their suffering intensified.

Recognising the immediacy and inhumanity of the incident, Fr Ambrose Pinto, the Principal of St Josephs Arts and Science College, convened a meeting to facilitate action on the issue. Representatives from the NGOs of Sangrama, SICHREM , Global Concern India, People’s Union for Civil Liberties, Indian Social Institution and Centre for Social Concern from St Josephs College were present at the meeting. A few volunteers of NSS and students from MSW and Mass Comm were also in attendance.

A plan was chalked out to approach the situation. A commission consisting of NGO members and students was sent out to investigate the story. The living conditions prevalent in the Beggars’ colony, the process of admission and removal of the inmates, the health care and sanitation facilities that the inmates have to grapple with are just a few of the issues the commission will be confronting.

Fr Pinto said, “We need to approach the whole case as agnostics. We do not believe anything that we have heard about the incidents in Beggars’ Colony, but we would like to find out ourselves what actually has been happening there.”

The purpose of the meeting was to elicit a response and mobilise action from members of civil society against the atrocities that unfolded over the course of the last two days.

Reflecting on the need to gather public support on the issue, Mr Kiran, from the MSW Department said, “Every human being has a basic fundamental dignity to life. Violation of that right must be confronted. We cannot allow the perpetrators to live in a camouflage of denial.”

A candle-light vigil was held on Friday at Town Hall in protest of the incident.

156 units of blood collected at SJC

156 units of blood were donated to the blood bank of the K C General Hospital, Malleshwaram, here on Wednesday. The blood was collected at the blood donation camp organised jointly by the NCC, NSS and CSC of the College. Out of the 161 students who volunteered for donation, five were rejected due to their under weight.

The Camp was inaugurated at 9 a.m. by the Registrar of the College Mr Raymond. The blood donation began an hour later at 10 a.m. Dr Renuka and Dr Kiran of the K C General Hospital were present at the venue along with three lab technicians.

“The blood collected here will be kept in our blood bank. It will be available for the poor patients who are in need,” said Dr Kiran. He also added, “Platelets are in great demand these days along with the negative blood groups. But platelets can only be extracted if the donor is above 65 kgs, who is capable of donating 500 ml of blood.”

All the donors were students from the UG and PG sections of the College.

“This is the first time I have donated blood. I’m feeling a little tired and weak, but I’m really happy that I have donated,” said Pema, from I CEB.

“NCC and NSS has been organising the blood donation camps individually, but this is the first time we are doing it together,” Said Himanshu Sharma, the Cadet Junior Under Officer of the NCC.

The number of units collected last year by the NCC was 90, but the joint venture this year has added 66 more to the tally.

Build new India, students told

“Let us contribute to the building of a new India,” said Fr Ambrose Pinto, in his message to the students on the occasion of the 64^th Independence Day. He was speaking after unfurling the national flag here on Sunday, August 15.

and touched upon issues such as discrimination, corruption, developmental problems etc. He called upon the students to contribute to the development of

, and emphasised that “True freedom is not possible unless we contribute and participate.”

Vice Principal, Fr Clarence D’Souza reminded the students of the freedom struggle and related the struggle to the present day scenario of economic inequality. “Freedom has been achieved, we can boast about our culture and diversity; but freedom has to be filtered to a greater section of society,” he said.

Fr D’Souza added that, from 1947, freedom movements painted the colours of free India and today we carry those colours with pride and national fortitude.

The spirit of Independence Day was brought alive, when the tri-coloured flag was hoisted by Fr Ambrose Pinto, and the national anthem was sung. The National Cadets Corps (NCC) and students of various associations greeted the Principal and the Vice Principal.

Students test oratory skills on Campus

Chemical Society of St Joseph’s College organised a lecture competition on Friday. The aim of the event was to test the oratory skills and subject knowledge of students.

The judges were Dr Mohan Das and Dr Nayeem Ulla Khan. Ten students participated in the competition and spoke about their topic for 10 minutes.

Some of the topics were ‘Evolution of antibiotic’, ‘The ultimate question of life’, ‘Dream’, etc.

Supreeth, a II Msc Chemistry student, said, “In the competition the students had interaction, which gave them confidence and initial step of presenting well in their communication.”

‘Help children develop leadership qualities’

Samantha Wilson, an executive learner and coordinator at Child Leader Project (CLP) from California has called upon students to inspire leadership among children.

She was addressing the students of St Joseph’s College here on Thursday. The seminar was organised by the Centre for Social Concern.

The lecture highlighted on indoctrinating the excellence of leadership in children right from childhood.

“The need of the hour is to create leadership awareness among children globally,” said Samantha Wilson.

“We don’t want politicians, as politicians merely talk and do not act, but rather we need young active change agents in the society,” she added.

Samantha Wilson also emphasised the dire need of young entrepreneurs who would be change makers in society.
